Why Size Matters More Than Most People Realize
A mat that is too small does two things wrong at once: it looks like an afterthought, and it does not actually clean shoes properly. A mat you can step over in one stride is a mat that is not doing its job.
The rule is simple — your doormat should be at least as wide as your door opening, and deep enough to require two full steps to cross. Both feet need to make real contact with the mat surface for meaningful dirt removal to happen. For wide doors, double entries, and expansive porches, that means going large.
A generously sized mat always looks more intentional. It anchors the entry, fills the space properly, and tells every visitor that this home is cared for. And practically speaking — more surface area means more dirt stays outside where it belongs.
Which Entryways Need a Large Doormat?
Double Front Doors
Double doors are a statement — and a small mat in front of them looks like a mistake. For any double door entry, 30 by 48 inches is the minimum size that looks proportional and covers the full entry effectively. Our Jumbo Natural Coir Doormat and our Medallion collection mats are the go-to choices for double door entries across the country.
Wide Covered Porches
The wide Southern porch, the New England farmhouse wraparound, the craftsman bungalow front veranda — these spaces deserve a mat that fills them properly. A single standard mat on a wide porch looks lost. A large coir mat, or a pair of matching mats placed side by side, creates the kind of entry that stops people in their tracks.
Grand or Formal Entryways
For homes with elevated stoops, decorative columns, or formal entry architecture — a large, high-quality mat is not optional, it is essential. Our Medallion collection offers large-format premium mats with traditional patterns that complement formal home styles from colonial revivals to Georgian estates.
Busy Family Homes and Active Households
Multiple adults, kids coming in from the backyard, dogs shaking off a rainy walk — busy households need more mat, not less. A large doormat gives every person — and every paw — enough surface to properly clean their footwear before tracking anything further inside. If your household sees heavy daily traffic, sizing up is one of the most practical home decisions you can make.
Garages and Side Entries With High Traffic
For many American families the garage door sees more daily traffic than the front door. A large mat at the garage entry — wide enough to step fully onto when coming in from the car — dramatically reduces how much dirt, dust, and road grime makes it into the house.
Our Large Doormat Materials Explained
Natural Coir — The Classic Large Outdoor Mat
Natural coir is the most effective dirt-scraping material available, and in a large format it becomes even more powerful. More bristle surface means more contact with shoe soles and more debris removed with every step. Our Jumbo Natural Coir Doormat is our largest coir offering — extra thick, extra dense, and built for the entries that see the most traffic.
Coir large mats perform best under a covered porch or overhang. For wide Southern porches, New England covered entries, and Pacific Northwest homes with deep roof overhangs, a large coir mat is the definitive choice.
Aqua-Loc Mats — Water-Absorbing for Indoor and Transitional Entries
Our Aqua-Loc mats are a unique water-trapping design that absorbs moisture on contact rather than just scraping it. Available in multiple large sizes and a range of neutral colorways — grey, beige, and maroon — these mats work beautifully as indoor entry mats just inside the front door, catching whatever moisture the outdoor coir mat does not stop.
The Aqua-Loc range is also an excellent choice for mudrooms, laundry room entries, and any transitional space where wet boots and damp footwear are a regular occurrence.
Medallion Collection — Large Premium Mats for Formal Entries
Our Medallion mats are our largest premium offering — available in classic red and elegant black with traditional patterned designs. These are the mats for homeowners who want the front door to make a real statement. Durable, non-slip, and sized for the grand entries they are designed for.
Getting the Size Exactly Right
The most common sizing mistake with large doormats is not going large enough. Here is the quick reference guide:
For a standard single front door — 24 by 39 inches is the sweet spot, but our large collection starts where standard mats end.
For a double door entry of 60 to 72 inches wide — 30 by 48 inches minimum. Size up if your porch depth allows it.
For a wide covered porch — consider two matching large mats placed side by side to fill the space properly. This also creates a layered look that is one of the biggest entryway trends of 2026.
For a garage or side entry — measure the full width of the door opening and choose a mat that covers at least 80 percent of that width.
When in doubt — size up. A mat that is slightly too large always looks better than one that is slightly too small.
How Long Do Large Doormats Last?
A quality large coir mat in a covered placement lasts three to five years with basic care. Our Aqua-Loc mats are machine washable and designed for long-term indoor use. Our Medallion premium mats are built for years of outdoor performance in demanding conditions.
The investment in a quality large mat pays for itself quickly. A cheap oversized mat that flattens within six months and needs replacing costs more over time — and your entry looks worse the whole time it is in service.
